The Greyhound Racing Industry – Where I Stand

This may be a controversial post but it is one that I feel I need to write given my current situation and position in the greyhound society.  I’ve always been the kind of person who tiptoes around the serious issues.  I don’t like conflict or confrontation and I’ve witnessed many others before me who have experienced a great backlash from speaking out against greyhound racing.  So I’d like to start by saying, this is not a post to attack, vilify or protest.  This is my personal opinion to set the record straight and I am giving it based on certain comments and queries that I have received on my social media accounts.  So here it is…

I personally do not support the greyhound racing industry, I never have and I never will.  My belief is, that if it weren’t for this industry and the greed and corruption within it, then these beautiful creatures would not be put in situations where they have never known a loving family and many never will. For me, even one single greyhound being deliberately hurt, killed, mistreated or unloved is enough for me to turn against an entire industry and I am aware that this may be stereotyping or labeling, but to be honest I don’t really care.  My love for dogs, and particularly greyhounds is blind, obsessive and forever loyal and I simply can’t defend an industry where some (perhaps many) greyhounds are abused. Perhaps there are good trainers out there who do the right thing, but unfortunately, in my opinion this does not outweigh the horror stories that I have witnessed with my own eyes and the appalling statistics that for me are simply unacceptable.

I have been asked why I don’t more openly share my views on the racing industry and the reason is simple.  My goal is to help greyhounds everywhere to find their forever homes.  I’m not one to deal with controversy, it is not a strength of mine, and I feel that this would deter me from my original purpose.  I am doing my part to support greyhounds in the best way that I know how; by raising money and raising awareness of greyhound adoption. I know there are many others out there supporting the greyhounds in the best way they know how; by fighting to shut down the racing industry and I fully support this. I know the statistics, I know the facts. I like to think that I am well read and well researched in regards to this issue so please don’t think that I am turning a blind eye to it or that I don’t know what I’m talking about.

I hope and pray that one day there will be no need for greyhound re-homing and that these gentle giants will never be mistreated again.
