Greyhound of the Week – Luna

Name: Luna, nickname Lunadine of the Dunadine

Why did you choose to adopt a greyhound? We searched for a long time trying to determine what type of dog would be the best addition to our little family. Once I discovered greyhounds, I was in love! We loved the idea of a sweet, gentle giant with a docile nature and a love for lazy days and naps! And that’s exactly what we got with Luna!

How did we adopt her? We searched through the adoptable dogs in several greyhound adoption organizations in our area and landed on Luna, at the time named  “Dujo’s Honda,” on the website of Friends of Retired Greyhounds (FORG). We met her at her foster mom’s house and fell in love! We adopted her that week. FORG does “foster to adopt” to make sure the home is a good fit. So we fostered her for a few weeks and on February 14, 2015, her gotcha day, we made it official!

What we love about her: She is so sweet and gentle, not to mention her strong lazy bone! She can definitely pick up and go, making huge loops around the dog park in record time, or go on a long hike in the Colorado mountains, then take a sweet, much deserved snooze. The “45 mile and hour couch potato” nickname is so true for these hounds!

With Luna, her personality has really blossomed from day one. This poor lil lady had no idea what it was like to be in a human family, live in a house, or have her own personal toys or space. Every little step along the way felt like such an accomplishment: the first time she went up or down the stairs (huge success!), the first time she picked up a toy (she had no idea what toys were for the longest time), and the first time she gave us a kiss or wagged her tail!  We could see her becoming more dog-like every day, learning to love and trust us; each step she made was so heartwarming and exciting to us!

Funny quirks: She is a quirky little lady! Her version of playing is to roll over and lay on her back with her feet in the air and just open her mouth! She freezes in this position waiting for you to play with her. She also has a great friendship with an adorable long haired dachshund named Abe.  They’re the most adorable couple to see playing and walking down the street together, little and big!

Anything else you’d like to share? It has been a long road with Luna, but seeing her progress has been so worth it! We speak so highly of the greyhound breed, they really are like magical unicorn extra-terrestrial hybrid beings. We love our lil sentient Lunadine!
